Hughes Net Gen 4

HughesNet recently launched a satellite called  Echo Star XVII.  It is an internet only Satellite that produces speeds comparable to ViaSat's Exede Satellite.

1.  They are still using a pay for speed model.  In order for the upstream to be comperable to Exede, you must upgrade your package.  This is particularly important when you look at interactive applications such as Skype.  Data must leave your computer to go somewhere else, so upload becomes important.

2.  They position the data packages as 20, 30, and 40 Gig relative to their fair access policy.  The data threshholds are competitive, but a little misleading.  It is separated into day and night usage.  Day time usage is in the 8 AM to 2AM time frame.  Night time usage is in the 2 AM to 8 AM time frame.  In the case of the Power package, its really a 10 Gig package with additional 10 Gig available at night.

Legacy information on Hughes Net prior to Gen 4 is below

Hughes Net and Wild Blue are competitors.  They both are satellite internet providers.  Every business has its area's where they do very well.  There are three things that Hughes New does very well.

1.  Hughes Net offers more packages and higher rates of speed.

2.  Hughes Net has more satellites, so they can in certain cases prevent a non-standard charge by using another satellite to correct a line of site issue.

3.  Hughes Net also offers what is known as a static IP.  Of course, there is an extra fee for that service.
